Women's Health Month-
In honor of Women’s History Month, we are collecting donations to help provide personal hygiene kits for girls’ and women’s shelters across Wayne and Oakland Counties, including the city of Detroit. Each kit will include a selection of high‑quality personal care items to support the comfort and dignity of those we serve.
Our goal is to distribute these kits in summer 2026. Every donation—no matter the size—is deeply appreciated.
On behalf of the Girls Inspiring Girls Groups, we are deeply pleased, honored, and grateful to receive a generous grant from The Skillman Foundation to support the cost of hygiene kits for young women residing in homeless shelters throughout the City of Detroit. Kits will be distributed this summer 2026.

How Detroit Compares-
Detroit recorded 565 teen births in 2023, the highest number among Michigan cities, reflecting both its larger population and its continued disproportionate burden of adolescent childbearing. The city's teen birth rate was 24.9 births per 1,000 females ages 15–19, more than twice the Michigan statewide rate of 11.0 per 1,000 and substantially higher than the U.S. rate of 13.1 per 1,000 in 2023.
Detroit has experienced significant declines in teen pregnancy and birth rates over the past decade, consistent with broader state and national trends. Despite this progress, teen pregnancy remains an important public health concern. Historical data from the Detroit Health Department indicate that approximately 1,600 Detroit adolescents became pregnant each year, a rate that has remained considerably higher than the Michigan average.
The persistently elevated teen birth rate highlights ongoing disparities in access to reproductive health services, education, and social and economic opportunities. Continued investment in evidence-based prevention strategies, comprehensive sexual health education, and youth-focused support services remains critical to further reducing teen pregnancy and improving health outcomes for Detroit's young people.
